Re: "Twilight"

Lordy, am I the ONLY one on my flist and the internets in general who was so blah on Twilight that I actually didn't even bother finishing the first book even though I had all three on my computer waiting to read and plenty of time to finish them? Seriously, am I the only one who does NOT GET THE SQUEE over these novels? Boring, one-dimensional characters, onion-slice thin plot, lackluster dialogue, plodding prose.

Just me? Really?

[identity profile] musing-mia.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Not the only one. Every time I see a Twilight post on ONTD, I scroll past it. Seems really silly to me, and I like vamps.

[identity profile] arabian.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I know. Silly. That's it. The books are silly, and vamps? Are not silly.

[identity profile] dollsome.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
WORST. BOOKS. EVER. Ever.

With that being said, I have a complete morbid fascination. Powered by so much fiery loathing it cannot even be captured in words. I HATE THEM SO MUCH. WHY ARE THEY SO POPULAR. WHYYY. Etc., etc.

[identity profile] arabian.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
They really are bad.

I question the WHYYYYYYYYYYYYY as well.

Ooh, I WANT to comment on your icon, but I don't want to give away my Donna thoughts before my loooooooooooooong Dr. Who post. And I kinda want to finish the eps available before watching it. (I intend to this week, so I may actually do so)

[identity profile] dollsome.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I am definitely looking forward to this looooooong Doctor Who post! :D And, man, Donna makes my LIFE. She -- is -- so -- awesome. If I were forced to choose between which brought me more delight, the Brotp or Donna flippin' Noble, well . . . I'm not sure I could.

[identity profile] arabian.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
No comment. I'm not spoiling my Donna or any other non-previously-stated thoughts on Doctor Who until I write my post.

Oh.. they are not so bad.... they are perfect for when you want to read all about Mary Sue and her supernatural friends who love her and protect her no matter what!!!!! ;)

I read them because a friend of mine loves them, but they are severely lacking. Also upsets me because I could probably write something better if I got off my ass and tried!

[identity profile] arabian.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I read your first line and thought, 'no, they're that bad,' and then the rest of the line and LOL! Good one.

The writing something better?! That's the worst part, really. My sister and I both feel the same.

Does blind hatred count? Because that's how I feel about them.

[identity profile] arabian.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I can't even muster up even negative enthusiasm for them. Seriously, it wasn't that I couldn't finish the first book, I just didn't care and kinda forgot it was there despite my best friend hounding me to finish it.

Hahahaaa, I haven't read them and have no interest in reading them. I've seen hilarious excerpts posted on someone's LJ, though... I forget whose. I'm not sure what the whole thing about vampires is. They suck your blood. LIKE TICKS AND MOSQUITOES. Ticks and mosquitoes are gross and annoying, ergo, so are vampires.

[identity profile] arabian.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Hah, I didn't even enough, or forgot that part. But yeah, that sums up the lameness of the books.

Twilight

[identity profile] leosgreens.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
Haven't read them. Are they the ones whose author is a Mormon and are written for teenagers?

[identity profile] arabian.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
No clue about the Mormon, but yes about written for teenagers.

[identity profile] harper47.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never read them and don't intend to. So probably not the only one, I just have never been tempted. There's very few vampire novels I read - Sookie Stackhouse from Charlene Harris might be the only one.

[identity profile] arabian.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm GOING to read Sookie Stackhouse (HBO is making a series based on them with Anna Paquin!!! as Sookie) and my sister wanted me to read them before I knew that, so I'm definitely going to read those.

Ah, my Neil/Lacey icon will never not have a match of some sort as long as you have your Lacey/Kam icon.

[identity profile] tlp70.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know. I haven't read them yet, but my daughter is absolutely obssessed with them. She hooked my sister-in-law on the books, too, and they're both now totally nuts over all things Twilight. Taylor's been begging me to read them so I'm sure I'll finally get through them over the summer. I'll let you know my thoughts then.

[identity profile] arabian.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, let me know. My best friend normally has a brain, but she's obsessed. I don't get it. I just don't.

[identity profile] boundaid.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I like my sexual tension fine and dandy. But I hated this. I read about 85% and my brain literally died.

[identity profile] arabian.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Literally died, huh? Wow. That ... that was more original and entertaining than a single line in these books. Kudos!

[identity profile] boundaid.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I try, I do. I think the hype and the fact that it's fandom takes it so seriously is what makes it worse. Like Harry Potter. It came out and was good. Then it BLEW up even more with the movies. Twilight blew up with the viral campaign iconmakers had no idea they were partaking in by casting French models and teen queens as characters. Videos and art based on text by a housewife (Mormon at that...? Ironic.) Like, I HATE THIS BOOK. I'm not even trying to mask that. I thought I loved it, forced myself to continue and then got a bad book hangover. One that SO does not fade away.

[identity profile] arabian.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I told myself it was better than it was when I started reading it because there was SUCH obsession about it. But nope, no, they just suck.

[identity profile] unicorn23.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I have never heard of the book until I saw the trailer for the movie based on the book. I'm only interested in watching it because Kristen Stewart is in it. Otherwise, meh.

[identity profile] arabian.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't know who she is enough to care, or anyone else in it. But hey, the movie may be a lot better than the book.

Aww, Julianne. Did you get her CD? And did you see? Her CD debuted at #3 on the charts. Go Julianne!!

[identity profile] unicorn23.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I ordered her CD through Amazon (just can't be bothered to go into a record store these days). Have to support my girl! And yes! You're actually the first one who told me about her CD debuting at an amazing #3! That is awesome. I'm thrilled for her. I can only imagine what she's feeling.

[identity profile] arabian.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so proud of her!!!!!!!!

I'd never heard of 'Twilight' until I saw that they were making a movie of it. And I still don't know what it's about.

Twilight is a great book and it sucks you right in because you want to see what happens to the characters because of how she introduces them to the reader. She weaves the story where you see that Bella and Edward are a lot alike, even with him being a vampire, they are looking for the same thing which acceptance of who they are. They are both lost souls until they meet that first day in the cafe at school. I've heard a lot of good things about the other books so I'm looking forward to them. It may not be everyone's cup of tea but the other good thing about this series it allows you to escape from the world around you into a another world for a short time. I'm really looking forward to the movie because the actor who played Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter will be playing Edward. They chemistry that he has with the actress playing Bella is suppose to be amazing.

The mormon housewife whose name is Stephanie Meyer is a very good writer. Her new book The Host is excellant.

I read enough of the book to have read all that you described and I disagree mightily. However, that is merely my opinion. Obviously, based on the reaction elsewhere in the world, mine is the minority opinion (although, not so much in this thread).

I have no issue with you stating your opinion (although, I don't know who you are), but this wasn't a "Why does anyone think Twilight is a great book?" post. It was a "Am I the only one on my flist who thinks it sucks? post."
