It's Oscar Time!
I'm actually watching the Oscars, which I haven't done in a few years -- mostly for Ellen Degeneres and to see a such a long-shot Dicaprio win, but hey, that's something. My choices for the wins (even knowing, all of the acting races will go to someone else, sigh).
Best Actor: I'm all for the DiCaprio (just watched Blood Diamond last night), (but like with Helen Mirren, Whittaker's a shoe-in at this point). He continues to prove what an outstanding actor he is, and taking into account his performance in The Departed as well ... what a year!
Best Actress: Kate Winslet, I adore her, but I admit that part of the joy would be if she and LD won and we'd see tons of pictures with them!!! (Aaah, Titanic mini-reunion! Jack lives!), but again Mirren has it in the bag ... even Winslet has been saying that. Hee.
Best Supporting Actor: I'd like to see Djimon Hounsou win because he was awesome in BD, but I'd be cool with Wahlberg taking it because THAT? was what a truly outstanding supporting performance should be. Hounsou was great, but more leading than supporting.
Best Supporting Actress: I haven't seen Notes on a Scandal, but Blanchett has never not been amazing so I'd love for her to win, if not her, Adriana Barraza, who broke my heart into a million little pieces and whom I just loved, loved, loved by the end of Babel, and damnit, I made up a happy-ass ending for her character, so there! She did get that lawyer and kicked some immigrationistas ass! Hudson was good, but not Oscar-nomination, let alone Oscar-win-worthy, but I'm in the minority there I know. Still, I like her, so I won't be bummed when she takes it.
Best Director: Scorcese for the win. Not only is it about time, but this is the first movie he's directed (from The Age of Innocence -- don't get me started on my red hatred over that adaptation -- and on) that deserves a nomination. The Departed was brilliantly directed.
Best Picture: I haven't seen The Queen (although I'm working on it! and might actually get to it tonight before I see the win because I'll be at work when the Oscars finish) or Iwo Jima (I've never liked any Eastwood movie, so I doubt I'll ever watch it), but of the three I've seen why Little Miss Sunshine was nominated is a mystery -- it's good, but barely bordering on great and so not worthy of a nom, let alone a win. I mean seriously, it's better than the Ghost nomination, but still ... Babel was good, but didn't have the oomph of an ending that would have made all we sat through worth it. Which leaves ... The Departed and that kicks ass. Deserves a win, no question.

Adriana Barraza should have won but no one knows her. They went with the easy pick with Jennifer Hudson.
An Inconvenient Truth winning was great. I don't know if it was the best documentary but hopefully it will make a lot of people stand up and do something about this calamity. I believe we will destroy ourselves if we don't get up and do something.
The rest is one big yawn. Even Jerry Seinfeld had me nodding off. I'm rooting for Leo and Meryl for the biggies, but they won't win. Boo.
